versus concrete processing modes, and ask people to predict the consequences of positive and negative events. Such a study could also include measures of emotional impact in order to directly test whether shifts in construal level yield opposite effects on evaluations of consequences versus affective reactions (Terum & Svartdal, submitted). Final Remarks By the advent of CLT, scholars gained a powerful analytic tool for understanding a variety of phenomena. It enables students of human behaviour to draw conceptual links between phenomena that, until now, have been studied within separate research traditions.

Construal-level theory of psychological distance.
People are capable of thinking about the future, the past, remote locations, another person's perspective, and counterfactual alternatives. Without denying the uniqueness of each process, it is proposed that they constitute different forms of traversing psychological distance. Psychological distance is egocentric: Its reference point is the self in the here and now, and the different ways in wh...

متن کاملSpontaneous trait inference and construal level theory: Psychological distance increases nonconscious trait thinking.
Can psychological distance affect how much perceivers form spontaneous trait inferences (STI) from others' behaviors? On the basis of construal level theory (CLT) which posits that distant (vs. near) entities are represented more in terms of their abstract, global, and decontextualized features, we predicted that perceived distance would increase the tendency for perceivers to draw spontaneous ...
متن کاملRunning head: POWER DIFFERENCES IN THE CONSTRUAL OF A CRISIS
In this research, we examine the relationship between power and three characteristics of construal—abstraction, valence, and certainty—in individuals’ verbatim reactions to the events of September 11, 2001 and during the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks. We conceptualize power as a form of social distance and find that position power (but not expert power) was positively associated ...
متن کاملWhat if? Counterfactual reasoning, pretense, and the role of possible worlds
Counterfactual thinking, where one envisions alternative possible events and their outcomes, is hypothesized to be one of the primary ways in which we reason about causal relationships (e.g., Pearl, 2000; Woodward, 2003). Recent computational and experimental work suggests that both adults and children may reason about causality in a manner consistent with probabilistic graphical models – coher...
